What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral that is mined from the ground. It has been linked to many respiratory diseases like asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. It was used in many different building materials because it is very hard, fire resistant, and it has good insulating qualities. It can be found in roofing materials, floor coverings, pipe insulation, wall plaster, joint compound, sheetrock, fireproofing, window caulking and glazing and many construction adhesives just to name a few.
How do I know if I have asbestos in my home?
While many products that contain asbestos have unique characteristics, the only way to know for sure is to have samples taken and analyzed in a lab.
How much does it cost to have asbestos removed from my home?
There are so many building products that contain asbestos that it is impossible to give that question a simple answer. The cost can range from the hundreds to the thousands of dollars. At Sunstream Corporation we do not estimate based on unit prices. We look at each job and base our price on what is required for that project, and we don’t charge for our estimates.
If I find that I have asbestos am I required to have it removed?
No. There is no requirement to remove asbestos from your building. In fact if it is in good shape it may be better to just leave it alone. If however you are planning a renovation or demolition the asbestos must be identified and removed prior to starting construction.
If I have asbestos in my building can I remove it myself?
If you are a home owner, and the building is a single family house in which you live you are exempt from the asbestos regulations in New York State, and you can remove it yourself. However if you choose to hire a contractor, they must be licensed to remove asbestos by the New York State Department of Labor.
Is asbestos still being used today?
Yes, while the EPA banned the use of asbestos in some building materials in the 1980’s there are many materials which still contain asbestos today.
Are there any regulations for the remediation of mold in New York State?
New York State has just passed a regulation regarding mold remediation. It will require contractors to follow specific guidelines and take required training in order to perform mold remediation in New York. Currently the training requirements and guidelines are being worked out and this regulation should take affect sometime in 2015.
How do I know if I have lead paint in my home?
Lead detection kits can be purchased from many local retailers, however these can sometimes be unreliable because they will only tell you what is in the surface layer of paint. The best way to determine if you have lead paint is to contact a consultant who has the ability to use XRF technology. Using an XRF “gun” a consultant can tell if there is lead in any of the underlying layers of paint.
Can I remove lead paint from my home myself?
Yes, however if it is done incorrectly the situation can be made many times worse and contamination can be spread to previously unaffected areas of the home.
